History and Morality

History and Morality

In being an African American who studies primarily African American studies there is a constant internal battle that ensures. On the one hand, studying the history of my own race empowers me to overcome societal restrictions and idealize my own identity while on the other it introduces countless examples of inequality and racial violence.

Therefore, a constant duality exists within my mind between history and morality. After years of intensive historical research and teaching I have found that the main reason I continue to maintain a positive outlook on the material I interpret is hope.

For me, hope is the bridge between history and morality.

This video project encompasses the battle of history and morality. The video displays myself walking through and contemplating different historical moments that are spliced with times of hope such as speeches from Malcolm X and Martin Luther Luther King Jr. The animations displayed interpret how history is personal and no matter how analytical it may be perceived certain historical narratives will have greater meaning to a person who is highly affected by it.
